About: A collection of thoughts ... from a boy in Toronto.

Contemplating the different possibilities that could affect the rest of my life

- Preference: get accepted into Masters of Adult Education and Community Development Program (emphasis on the latter part.  Not boring, oppressive, traditional “teaching”) at OISE in Toronto.  Or, better yet, find good work and avoid the more school route!

Now potential back up plans…

- post degree Bachelor of Social Work at York (not feeling the long commute and same setting I was in for the last four years.  Also, not feeling doing two more years of school for just a Bachelor.  Program is one of the more appealing ones though.  And I do have a pretty awesome place in mind to live if I were to stay a student)

- Masters of Social Work in Hawaii (mostly because Hawaii would be AWESOME … if not isolated.  And I don’t imagine the program being amazing.  One of the universities’ info on their website is 3 years outdated…)

- Masters of Social Work at San Francisco State University (San Francisco is pretty awesome, and the program seems pretty great.  Deadline passed though…)

- Masters of Social Work program in Brooklyn (program doesn’t seem to emphasize an anti-oppression framework which would be ideal.  The social work building just moved to a newly built one in East Harlem, which sounds appealing.  Not tooo late to apply.  It’s crazy when I meet people who ended up at a certain school for trivial reasons like they missed the deadline at another school or somehow their documents didn’t get sent in properly)

- Social Work program in Portland (one of the US’s most liveable cities.  Near a river, excellent public transportation, lots of green spaces and very environmentally conscious, and a left-leaning tradition.  Home to the Red and Black (aka anarchist) Cafe.  But, pretty much too late unless they would push back the deadline for me)

- Copenhagen (one of the world’s most liveable cities.  No suitable programs for me in English :(

- Supposedly Windsor has a very progressive Social Work program (deadline passed, and didn’t look amazing from my browsing)

- UBC (have to take mandatory courses first, which wouldn’t be worth my while for a back up plan )

- Berlin…

There is lots to learn in a city beyond the classroom, but it would be nice to go to a school where I actually liked the program and would find it enriching.  Aside from the winters, why would I want to leave Toronto; what is according to the UN, the most multicultural and multiracial city in the world?  A place where I’ve already began to make connections and get familiarized with different organizations and places, which would be lost if I leave and had to be restarted elsewhere.

Maybe if it gets too late and grad school doesn’t work out this year, I could find an okay job (work at a sweet coffee shop or a credit union), make some money — perhaps while still applying for jobs — and then go all out on Masters apps next year.

To be continued (perhaps not digitally…)….
